GRIT: A Package for Structure-Preserving Simulations of Gravitationally Interacting Rigid Bodies

چکیده

Spin-orbit coupling of planetary systems plays an important role in the dynamics and habitability planets. However, symplectic integrators that can accurately simulate not only how orbit affects spin but also have been constructed for general systems. Thus, we develop Lie-group to consisting gravitationally interacting rigid bodies. A user friendly package (GRIT \url{https://github.com/GRIT-RBSim/GRIT}) is provided external forcings such as tidal interactions are included. As a demonstration, this applied Trappist-I. It shows differences transit timing variations due spin-orbit could reach few min ten year measurements, strong perturbations push Trappist-I f, g h out synchronized states.

Minimal Energy Configurations of Gravitationally Interacting Rigid Bodies

Consider a collection of n rigid, massive bodies interacting according to their mutual gravitational attraction. A relative equilibrium motion is one where the entire configuration rotates rigidly and uniformly about a fixed axis in R. Such a motion is possible only for special positions and orientations of the bodies. A minimal energy motion is one which has the minimum possible energy in its ...

Event-driven dynamics of rigid bodies interacting via discretized potentials.

A framework for performing event-driven, adaptive time step simulations of systems of rigid bodies interacting under stepped or terraced potentials in which the potential energy is only allowed to have discrete values is outlined. The scheme is based on a discretization of an underlying continuous potential that effectively determines the times at which interaction energies change. As in most e...

A new approach to the numerical integration of rotational motion for interacting rigid bodies

A new approach is developed to integrate numerically the equations of motion for systems of interacting rigid polyatomic molecules. With the aid of a leapfrog framework, we directly involve principal angular velocities into the integration, whereas orientational positions are expressed in terms of either principal axes or quaternions. As a result, the rigidness of molecules appears to be an int...

Geometric Structure-preserving Optimal Control of a Rigid Body

In this paper, we study a discrete variational optimal control problem for a rigid body. The cost to be minimized is the external torque applied to move the rigid body from an initial condition to a pre-specified terminal condition. Instead of discretizing the equations of motion, we use the discrete equations obtained from the discrete Lagrange–d’Alembert principle, a process that better appro...

A Vortex Method for Bi-phasic Fluids Interacting with Rigid Bodies

We present an accurate Lagrangian method based on vortex particles, level-sets, and immersed boundary methods, for animating the interplay between two fluids and rigid solids. We show that a vortex method is a good choice for simulating bi-phase flow, such as liquid and gas, with a good level of realism. Vortex particles are localized at the interfaces between the two fluids and within the regi...
